Dr. Magdalena M. Krol (CivMin PhD 1T1) is a 2026 Engineering Alumni Network (EAN) Impact Award Winner – Research and Innovation Award.
“This award is especially meaningful because it comes from a community that has been central to my growth. It is a recognition of the mentors, collaborators and supporters who have been part of my journey.”
Dr. Krol is an environmental engineer, researcher and educator whose work advances innovative solutions for groundwater contamination, land remediation, nuclear waste management and clean energy.
Being surrounded by exceptional faculty, colleagues and students, Krol was challenged to think critically, solve complex problems and pursue research with real-world impact. Inspired by a community that valued curiosity, collaboration and innovation, she built lasting relationships at U of T Engineering that continue to play an important role in her personal and professional success.
Krol’s advice to students: Life is long. Don’t feel pressured to have every step of your career mapped out from the start. Stay curious, be open to new opportunities, and remember that not every course needs to be your favourite. Focus on the bigger picture and whether the overall direction excites you.
The Impact Award Winner – Research and Innovation Award honours a graduate or a group of graduates whose groundbreaking research or innovative discoveries in engineering advance knowledge, technology or methodologies. It recognizes engineering or scientific achievements with the potential to transform their field, community or society.
A formal presentation is to be made at the Engineering Alumni Network Awards on October 1, 2026.
