October 29, 2024 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Centre for Climate Science and Engineering Lecture Series

Title: Engineering Design in a Future Changing Climate

Speaker: Dr. Sihan Li from RWDI
When: Tuesday, October 29, 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. (EST)
Where: Online Zoom Webinar
Additionally, below you will find the event’s details:
Presentation Abstract:
The non-stationarity of extreme climates in a future-changing climate poses challenges to civil engineering professionals. Can the conventional practice of using stationary historical climates for infrastructure design still be applicable? How will climate change affect infrastructure safety and design practice? In light of the deep uncertainty of future projections, what engineering solutions can be used to guide forward-looking practices toward effective adaptation and resilience? How should the engineering community adapt to incorporate climate change scenarios into practices? This seminar presented insights based on some of the latest research that has been used as a basis to update the National Building Code of Canada for incorporating climate change effects into design practice.
Speaker Bio:
Dr. Sihan Li has over 15 years of experience in wind engineering for tall buildings and large-span structures, risk and reliability assessment, climate adaptation and resilience. Some of his research has been used to update several international building codes and standards. Dr. Li earned his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Western Ontario. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, an Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP), a Member of the ASCE and CSCE, and a designated Risk Management Associate with RIMS. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles and has been a peer reviewer for many esteemed journals. He was awarded the Casimir Gzowski Medal in 2015 by the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering. Dr. Li is the chair of the ASCE Committee on Adaptation to a Changing Climate (CACC), co-chair of the ASCE 7-28 Future Condition Subcommittee Wind Task Committee, and chair of the ASCE CACC Risk Communication Task Committee. He also serves on several committees for codes and standards, including ASCE 7, NBCC; strategic committees, such as ASCE-NOAA Task Force on Climate Resilience in Engineering Practice; technical committees, such as ASCE SEI Objective Resilience Committee; and regional councils, such as the Asian Civil Engineering Coordinating Council.
