Integrated modelling of land use and transport

    Interest: Land-use transport interaction Abstract: Climate researchers agree that anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions significantly contribute to climate change, and that radical measures to reduce them and to adapt to no longer avoidable climate change are needed. In the project the IRPUD model developed at the University of Dortmund was applied. The IRPUD model is a simulation model of intraregional location and mobility decisions in urban regions. In the project the model was extended in space, time and policy fields to answer the following questions: How will settlement structure, transport, energy and environment in the Ruhr Area develop until the year 2050 under different assumptions about urban land use and transport policies? What will be the impacts of land use and transport policies on energy consumption and CO₂ emissions? Which policy recommendations can be derived from the results? Bio: Until 2003, Michael Wegener was Director of the Institute of Spatial Planning and Professor at the Faculty of Spatial Planning of the University of Dortmund. In 1988 and 1989 he was Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Tokyo. Since 2003 he is a partner in Spiekermann & Wegener (S&W) Urban and Regional Research, Dortmund. His main research fields are urban and regional development and European urban systems. His specialization is urban and regional modelling, in particular of land use, transport and the environment in cities and regions
