Why AI Skills Matter in Civil & Mineral Engineering

In today's civil and mineral engineering landscape, data analytics, machine learning, and AI are becoming foundational tools and drivers of innovation. Across disciplines, be it structural health monitoring, geotechnical risk prediction, urban infrastructure planning, resource extraction, or environmental systems, engineers now routinely tap into streams of sensor data, spatial information, remote sensing imagery, and operational logs to build predictive models, optimize performance, detect anomalies, and support decision making. In our MEng program, students in any specialization can gain fluency in these approaches by tapping into world-class courses in data analytics, machine learning, and AI

A guide to gaining AI, machine learning and data science skills in the CivMin MEng

Step 1: Build Your Skills – Foundational Courses

Step 1: Build Your Skills – Foundational Courses

These courses are designed to give students a solid foundation in data analytics, machine learning, and AI. Start at the level that matches your background and progress from there:

Introductory

  • CME538H1: Introduction to Data Science for Civil and Mineral Engineers
  • APS1070H: Foundations of Data Analytics and Machine Learning

Intermediate

  • MIE1626H: Data Science Methods and Statistical Learning
  • MIE1624H: Introduction to Data Science and Analytics
  • MIE1517H: Introduction to Deep Learning

Advanced

  • ECE1513H: Introduction to Machine Learning
Step 2: Go Deeper - Emphasis in Data Analytics & Machine Learning

Step 2: Go Deeper - Emphasis in Data Analytics & Machine Learning

If you want your AI training recognized on your transcript, check out the Faculty-wide Emphasis in Data Analytics & Machine Learning. CivMin MEng students can earn the emphasis by completing the prerequisite course (APS1070H), one core course, and three electives from a list of nearly 50 graduate courses spanning AI, machine learning, data science, and their applications across engineering.

Step 3: Apply Your Skills - MEng Projects in AI

Step 3: Apply Your Skills - MEng Projects in AI

Once you have built a foundation through coursework, an MEng project (CIV1001H or CIV1002Y, replacing one or two of your ten courses with approval) lets you apply AI and analytics to a real engineering problem under the supervision of a CivMin professor, and is one of the best ways to demonstrate your capabilities to future employers. Current opportunities are posted on the MEng Project Opportunities page(opens in new tab).
