Join us on March 27, 2024, at 5:00 pm (EST) for a CSE Lecture event! We will host Nidhi Subramanyam, Ph.D. from the University of Toronto who will present “Centering Equity in the Development of Climate-Adaptive and Resilient Drinking Water Systems.”

Presentation Abstract:

Drinking water system managers are actively adapting their systems to increase resilience to emerging stressors and changes, including climate impacts. To achieve this, some are collaborating with planners, environmental and social scientists to ensure that resilience-building measures are coordinated with other plans for growth management, climate change adaptation, watershed protection, and to ensure community well-being. These adaptation and resilience building measures present an opportunity to achieve transformative resilience by rectifying past mistakes, addressing the colonial histories of water supply planning, and expanding water access in equitable and just ways. This presentation presents a framework to guide planners and drinking water system managers to center equity and justice in the development of resilient water systems and avoid maladaptation. The talk will also discuss examples of decentralized infrastructures commonly used to build resilient systems in cities of the Global South, analyzing how they advance transformative resilience.

Speaker Bio:

Nidhi Subramanyam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto. Her research investigates how planning, policies, and governance intersect with and enhance water security and environmental justice for socially marginalized communities in fast-growing regions in India and Canada. She also investigates questions on migrant inclusion and rural-urban transitions in cities of the global South. At their core, all her projects interrogate how planning processes reflect and reinforce the status quo in moments of transition and how different social groups contest inequalities and transform planning at such moments to create just and sustainable futures. Dr. Subramanyam is a faculty affiliate with the School of Cities, the Data Sciences Institute, and the Centre for South Asian Studies at the University of Toronto.
