LatinX Marks the Spot: Latin American Student Experiences at U of T

Undergraduates and grads are invited to attend a workshop delivered by African Black Caribbean, Latin American, Southeast Asian & First Generation Student Engagement, “LatinX Marks the Spot: Latin American Student Experiences at U of T”, Wednesday, February 7, 4:30 – 6pm. Workshop Description

Partnership with Department of Spanish & Portuguese, Centre for Caribbean Studies and University of Toronto Students’ Union. Latin American students attend and discuss issues first highlighted in the report “X Marks the Spot: Reflecting on the LatinX Student Experience at U of T”, including self-identifying as LatinX, finding a cultural community, the role of language in building individual and group identities, and work / class / income. Join the report’s Co-authors: Dr. Berenice Villagómez, Undergraduate & Communications and Community Outreach Coordinator, Department of Spanish & Portuguese, and Eva Grace and Ana Rodriguez, U of T alumnae Double Majors in Latin American Studies; and Latin American peers, Mentor Navigators, and club leaders to share perspectives, experiences and support around belonging. This online workshop will include a presentation, breakout rooms and a panel Q&A.

 

Biographies and Photos

  • Dr. Berenice Villagómez is the Undergraduate & Communications and Community Outreach Coordinator for the Department of Spanish & Portuguese. This position expands on her previous role as the Latin American Studies Program Coordinator. As a result of the fond connections she has built with so many, she is recognized as a leader on the university experiences of St. George students with Latin American cultural backgrounds, and strives to open more spaces and opportunities for LatinX students on campus.
  • Ana Rodriguez is a Strategic Policy Analyst with the Ontario Treasury Board Secretariat. She holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Queen’s University with a focus on social policy, and holds a Bachelor’s degree from U of T, double majoring in Sociology and Latin American Studies.

 

  • Eva Grace is a Social Media Specialist at Wealthsimple, a Toronto fintech company. She has recently completed a certification in Digital Marketing at Brain Station. She graduated from U of T with a double major in Latin American Studies and International Relations.
