Dynamic Fracture
The Professors that study dynamic fracture at the University of Toronto use dynamic geomechanical models to investigate fundamentals of fracture and failure in rocks under stress and the associated acoustic output.
Dynamic modelling techniques are developed and are applied to both two-dimensional and three-dimensional rock models. The models are created using a distinct element code in which a rock is represented by an assembly of thousands of individual particles bonded together at points of contact. Cracks are induced in the rock mass during loading when particles separate and the connecting bonds are broken.
